What is Intermediate level waste?

Intermediate level waste consists primarily of used reactor core components and resins and filters used to keep reactor water systems clean. It is more radioactive than low level waste and requires shielding to protect workers during handling. Intermediate level waste is stored mainly in steel lined concrete containers that have been set into the ground. In terms of the total volume of low and intermediate level waste received at the Western Waste Management Facility - 95 percent is low level waste and 5 percent is intermediate level waste.
