International Peer Review Team
An International Peer Review Team (IPRT) was established from 2009 to 2010. The team reviewed the interim (2009) and final (2010) postclosure safety assessment reports.
The review team was comprised of safety assessment experts with experience in low, intermediate and high-level waste management programs in Belgium, France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The IPRT consisted of the following individuals: Dr. Peter de Preter, Mr. Graham Hickford (2010), Dr. Martin Kelly (2009), Dr. Paul Smith, and Dr. Jean Talandier. A brief biography of each is given below.

Peter De Preter
Peter is an engineer with 20 years experience in waste management. He is presently senior advisor to the general manager of ONDRAF/NIRAS (the Belgian agency for the management of radioactive waste), and is responsible for the safety and environmental protection strategy of radioactive waste management, and for the coordination of all interactions with the safety and environmental protection authorities. He is also responsible for the management of the Belgian underground research facility HADES.

Graham Hickford
Graham has over 25 years experience in radioactive waste management, most recently with SERCO Assurance Ltd (UK). His expertise includes contributions to site selection studies in the United Kingdom for both near surface and deep geological disposal facilities, and managing the postclosure safety assessment studies, which contributed to site selection. He played an important role in the development of two major postclosure safety assessments for a potential radioactive waste facility in the United Kingdom, and the development of the subsequent UK generic site safety assessments.

Martin Kelly
Martin is a senior consultant with SERCO Assurance Ltd (UK), with 16 years experience in radioactive waste performance assessments, modeling of contaminant transfer and uptake, and dose and risk assessment. Martin has been lead assessor for several risk assessments, including the UK 2011 LLWR low level waste repository. He has also undertaken work on contaminated land and chemotoxic assessments in the UK.

Paul Smith
Paul has 28 years of experience in mathematical modelling, safety assessment and safety case development. He has participated in a wide range of technical work related to safety assessment for repository programs in Europe and Japan, including methodology, model and software development, and execution and review of national assessment studies. He worked for several years with NAGRA (the Swiss radioactive waste management agency) in safety analysis, and is currently an independent consultant working recently with NAGRA, ONDRAF/NIRAS (Belgium), Posiva (Finland) and SKB (Sweden).

Jean Talandier
Jean is a specialist with over 16 years experience in numerical methods for fluid mechanics. He was involved in the development of numerical tools dedicated to the modelling of groundwater flow and radionuclide migration in porous media. He has participated in several safety assessments, in particular for the French low and intermediate-Ievel disposal facility. His expertise includes work related to gas modelling for radioactive waste repositories including gas production and gas migration. Since 2005, he has been responsible for the research program on gas migration at ANDRA (the French radioactive waste management agency).
