What is Low Level Waste?

Low level nuclear waste consists of common industrial items that have become contaminated with low levels of radioactivity during routine clean-up and maintenance at the nuclear generating stations. Low level waste includes mops, rags, paper towels, temporary floor coverings, floor sweepings, protective clothing and hardware items such as tools. It consists of paper, plastics, metal, rubber, cotton and other miscellaneous materials. Low level waste can be safely handled using normal industrial practices and equipment without any special radiation protection.
