The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) was established in 2002 in accordance with the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act to assume responsibility for long-term management of Canada's used nuclear fuel. The selected approach for the long-term management of used fuel is Adaptive Phased Management.

OPG's Deep Geolgic Repository Project for low and intermediate level waste (L & ILW)

Other Work

Since 2009, the NWMO has provided technical expertise in support of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) efforts to obtain regulatory approvals for a proposed Deep Geologic Repository (DGR).

 

OPG is the owner, licensee and operator of the DGR. It will be constructed at the Bruce nuclear site in the Municipality of Kincardine and is designed to accommodate low and intermediate level radioactive waste. The site will not accommodate used nuclear fuel.
