Board of Directors

The NWMO Board of Directors is responsible for the oversight of our organization and for taking a leadership role in the development of our strategic direction. Its members have the skills and experience needed to oversee the managerial, financial and operational activities associated with the long-term management of used nuclear fuel.

Glenn Jager

Chair

Glenn Jager is the retired President of Nuclear and Chief Nuclear Officer at Ontario Power Generation (OPG). In this role, Mr. Jager was accountable for all OPG’s nuclear operations, including generation, waste sites, major projects and new nuclear development. He was also President and CEO of Canadian Nuclear Partners, a wholly owned subsidiary of OPG, providing services to the energy sector in Canada and internationally. He served as chair and director on the board of the Canadian Nuclear Association from 2016 to 2018 and was seconded for two years to the World Association of Nuclear Operators in Atlanta as a team manager in plant evaluations. Mr. Jager is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and a graduate of the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Engineering Science in Electrical Engineering.

Laurie Swami

President and CEO, NWMO

Laurie Swami is the President and CEO of the NWMO. She was appointed to the role in 2016 and is responsible for implementing Canada's plan for the long-term management of used nuclear fuel.

 

Prior to joining the NWMO, Ms. Swami spent 30 years at Ontario Power Generation (OPG), primarily in nuclear operations. She served as Senior Vice-President of Decommissioning and Nuclear Waste Management, overseeing the operation of nuclear waste management facilities and planning for the decommissioning of a nuclear generating facility.

 

Ms. Swami has extensive experience leading environmental assessment projects, including nuclear refurbishments. She has appeared before joint panel reviews (including for the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission) for the Darlington New Nuclear Project and OPG's Deep Geologic Repository Project.

 

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Chemistry from Queen's University and a Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business. She is an ardent supporter of and advocate for the advancement of women to leadership positions. In recognition of this contribution, she received the Women in Nuclear Canada Leadership Award in 2016.

Board member

Jason Nouwens is the Director of External Affairs with New Brunswick Power’s Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station. He is a graduate of the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and brings nearly 25 years of varied nuclear industry experience to the role. He first joined the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station as a member of the Systems Engineering team, where he spent over a decade in various leadership roles leading into the full station refurbishment. Following various positions through the Station Refurbishment Project and several years in Capital Design and Projects, he joined the Regulatory Affairs team in 2014 and in 2016 where he was appointed Director of Regulatory Affairs, Community Affairs and Performance Improvement.

Lesley Gallinger

Lesley Gallinger is President and CEO of Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Under her leadership, the IESO oversees the safe and reliable operation of Ontario's bulk electricity system.

Previously, Ms. Gallinger served as President and CEO of Elexicon Energy, which she led through a sizeable merger integration. She has also held senior roles in the electricity sector, including Chief Strategy and Financial Officer at the Electrical Safety Authority as well as VP, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs and Chief Financial Officer at Oakville Hydro.

Ms. Gallinger sits on several boards, including the Ontario Energy Network, where she serves as Vice Chair. She also served on the boards of the Ontario Energy Association and the Electricity Distributors Association. She holds a Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business, is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a Certified Public Accountant (Illinois), and has completed the Chartered Director and Audit Committee Certified program at the DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University.

Sean Granville

As former Chief Operations Officer and Chief Nuclear Officer of Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Sean Granville was responsible for all of OPG's generating fleet, with a capacity of over 15,400 megawatts of electricity. This consisted of 10 nuclear units, 66 hydro stations, two thermal stations, one solar facility, as well as oversight of OPG subsidiaries Atura Power and Eagle Creek Renewable Energy. Mr. Granville's nuclear career spans 39 years including three years at Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station in New Brunswick. Mr. Granville's energy industry experience includes a World Association of Nuclear Operators secondment, as well as membership in the Canadian Nuclear Association and the CANDU Owners Group. Mr. Granville is also a board member of Women in Nuclear and past chair of the Canadian Chief Nuclear Officer Forum, as well as a past member of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations Executive Advisory Group. Mr. Granville is currently providing executive consulting services to the energy industry. Mr. Granville is a graduate of the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Ronald L. Jamieson

Board member

Ronald L. Jamieson is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Power Authority. Prior to his retirement in late 2005, he served as Senior Vice-President of Aboriginal Banking at Bank of Montreal Financial Group. Mr. Jamieson has held several senior executive positions in the financial services industry. Throughout his career, he has also been active in economic development initiatives for Indigenous communities across Canada. Mr. Jamieson served as Chairman, President and CEO of Ontario Energy Corporation, whose mandate was to invest or participate in energy projects throughout Canada. He is also chairman of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business and was recently named president of First Canadian Property Investments Ltd. In 2014, Mr. Jamieson was awarded the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada, as well as receiving an honorary doctoral degree from Nipissing University.

Josée Pilon holds a Master of Business Administration from Laval University. She was a member of the steering committee on the evaluation project for the refurbishment of the Gentilly-2 nuclear reactor. As a special projects manager, she is responsible for evaluating business opportunities for new sources of energy from the private sector, including wind power, biomass and hydroelectric. She is also involved in the evaluation of the financial impact of new hydroelectric projects on municipalities. Prior to her current position, she held numerous business development positions in international projects.

Since joining Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in 2001, Ms. Sinnathamby has held a variety of leadership positions at OPG within the Nuclear Division. More recently, she was appointed as OPG’s Chief Projects Officer. She plans to continue her focus on project excellence and building strong teams to enable the generation of clean, reliable power for all Ontarians. Ms. Sinnathamby recognizes the importance of driving project excellence by leading with world class project fundamentals, leveraging lessons learned and recognizing the importance of great leadership. She is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and serves on the Board of Directors for Atura Power and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.

 

In her previous role as Senior Vice President, Nuclear Refurbishment, Ms. Sinnathamby was responsible for all aspects of the Darlington Refurbishment Project, preparing the plant for 30+ additional years of low-cost, safe and reliable power generation. She has led the Darlington Refurbishment through several milestones, including Unit 3’s successful return to commercial operations, ahead of schedule. Her continued focus on innovation and building a sustainable culture have enabled the team to execute the refurbishment scope to the highest standard. Her leadership has propelled the refurbishment project to recognition on a global stage, with leaders from stations across the world looking to benchmark OPG’s success. 

 

A fierce advocate of equity, diversity and inclusion, Ms. Sinnathamby is also the executive sponsor of OPG’s women's empowerment groups, designed to create an environment that allows women to thrive in the workplace. She also provides mentorship to women both internal to the organization and externally through a number of forums. 

 

Ms. Sinnathamby is a graduate of the University of Guelph, with a B.Sc. (Hons) in environmental engineering, and has been a member of Professional Engineers Ontario since 1998.

Beth Summers

Board member

Beth Summers is the Chief Financial Officer of Hydrostor, a leading global developer and operator of long duration energy storage systems. Prior to joining Hydrostor, she was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Superior Plus, a distributor of propane, distillates and compressed natural gas, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Ontario Power Generation, Ontario’s largest electrical power generator and, prior to that, Chief Financial Officer of Just Energy Group Inc., a leading North American distributor of electricity and natural gas.

 

Ms. Summers also held progressively senior finance roles at Hydro One Inc., including Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. She began her career in the audit practice at Ernst & Young.

 

Ms. Summers is also a member of the Board of Directors of Wajax, a diversified industrial products and services provider.

 

Ms. Summers holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. She is a chartered accountant and holds a Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants designation from Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario.
