Sponsorships and donations
One of the ways we give back to the community is through the NWMO Sponsorships and Donations Program, which is designed to strengthen our commitment to corporate citizenship and prioritize initiatives that align with our core values. Since 2014, this program has supported a wide variety of initiatives, with the goal of having a meaningful impact on young people, communities and the environment.
Overview
Being a good corporate citizen is about the lasting impact each donation can make. Whether it is a bursary or scholarship to fund post-secondary education, support for a local sports league, donations to Indigenous communities to support cultural ceremonies or funding for more seniors’ programs at the community centre, every dollar and every initiative help the community be well and thrive.
This program demonstrates our commitment to corporate citizenship with a targeted focus on the following four areas:
- Northwestern Ontario community investment: We are committed to making a meaningful impact, especially in the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and Ignace area, where both communities agreed to move into the regulatory decision-making process as potential hosts for Canada’s future deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. Our investments focus on initiatives that positively impact the people who live and work in northwestern Ontario. We strive to build strong relationships with local communities and support initiatives that help the community thrive.
- Fostering future leaders: The impacts of our work will be felt for generations. We aim to inspire youth and future leaders in areas such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation. Read more about some of the programs we support in this category and their impact here.
- Walking a Reconciliation journey (supporting Indigenous communities): As part of our values, we strive to respect the rights and well-being of Indigenous Peoples and their spiritual connection to the land in every action we take. We support communities, organizations and other groups that are aligned with our values, Reconciliation Policy and strategic priorities, and that advance the rights, equity and well-being of Indigenous Peoples.
- Social and environmental sustainability: Our purpose is to protect people and the environment. That includes supporting communities, organizations and other groups that are aligned with our strategic priorities now and in the future, with a particular focus on well-being.

Ineligible applications
Initiatives involving political, religious or controversial causes are not eligible for funding.
This program is not meant to fund local businesses, individuals or typical operations of municipalities, bands or other levels of government (e.g., town infrastructure, maintenance services). It is also not intended to support staff social events.
Initiatives that are already receiving funding through this or other NWMO programs are not eligible.
Fostering future leaders
Since 2008, the NWMO has established strong relationships with not-for-profit organizations that support youth and science in regions that were involved in the site selection process and in provinces involved in the nuclear fuel cycle. Our sponsorship of these organizations recognizes the value in encouraging broad-based intergenerational learning.
