The NWMO is Making Key Investments to Support Community Well-being

In November 2017, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) made $200,000 available to the communities of Huron-Kinloss, South Bruce, Ignace and Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation to support their ongoing efforts to grow the well-being of their communities as they move into more intensive phases of study in the NWMO site selection process.

“We are pleased to contribute to the well-being of communities in advanced phases of work. These investments acknowledge the ongoing leadership of these communities in advancing the implementation of Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel,” said Dr. Mahrez Ben Belfadhel, Vice President of Site Selection. 

This community well-being investment is a complement to existing Learn More resource programs. The NWMO regularly reviews resource programs to support communities in the site selection process. At this point, communities in other areas involved in the project have not yet reached this advanced phase of work to be eligible for this funding. Funding for future years is under development and an update will be shared in 2018. 

Administered by the community, these funds are intended to support the community’s continuing efforts in areas such as: 

  • Projects, programs or services for community youth
  • Scholarship programs for community youth
  • Projects, programs or services for community seniors
  • Projects or programs to support community sustainability
  • Projects or programs to support community economic development
  • Projects or programs to support energy efficiency
About the NWMO

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.
