The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) recently hosted the Toronto chapter of the International Women’s Forum (IWF) at its Learn More Centre in the NWMO offices in Toronto.

Following a morning touring Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington Waste Management Facility, they were hosted at the NWMO by President and CEO, Laurie Swami. Attendees learned about Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel, the proposed deep geological repository, and the work underway with communities in Ontario to identify a single, preferred location for the deep geological repository, in an area with informed and willing hosts, by 2024.

“I was so pleased to host the Toronto chapter of the IWF at our Learn More Centre,” said Ms. Swami. “Their commitment to supporting women leaders and providing learning opportunities aligns well with our focus on supporting the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – or STEMinists.”

“IWF Toronto members come from every sector of the economy and share a passion for leadership programming for women,” said Pauline Couture, member of the IWF Toronto Chapter Executive. “Our members were thrilled to both tour the Darlington Waste Management Facility and visit the NWMO’s Learn More Centre to understand more about Canada’s plan first-hand.”

The IWF is a global non-profit membership organization made up of diverse, accomplished and influential women, who are dedicated to building better leadership locally and globally. This is achieved in part by supporting high-potential women through leadership development programs. The Canadian forum was established in 1995.
