Over the next few weeks, close to 400 students from across Grey and Bruce Counties will celebrate their passion for science and technology at the Bluewater Regional Science and Technology Fair (BRSTF). The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is once again a proud sponsor of this year’s fair. Through the NWMO sponsorship, the BRSTF will be able to purchase new student medals for the next five years.

“It is particularly satisfying that a science-based organization like the NWMO is sponsoring our science fair medals for the next five years. We are deeply grateful,” said Peter Thor, BRSTF Treasurer.

Since 1998, the BRSTF has been encouraging, inspiring and supporting interest in science, technology and engineering for youth as the largest science fair in the region. Every year, six students go through an extensive mentoring program before they move on to the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

“Our mentoring program for our Canada-Wide Team consumes the entire month between our senior fair and the Canada-wide fair in May. Under the mentorship of our Canada-wide committee, Bluewater team members improve their data, displays and verbal presentations to prepare for the very high standards at the Canada-Wide Science Fair,” noted Mr. Thor.

“As part of Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel, we aim to foster community well-being and capacity among youth in the areas where we are active. The BRSTF supports this by fostering and promoting science and technology skills for youth across the region,” says Cherie Leslie, Senior Engagement Advisor for the NWMO.

“I am always impressed to see science projects from the region’s brightest young minds. I am looking forward to participating as a volunteer judge again this year,” added Ms. Leslie.

The senior science fair is slated for Wednesday, April 3, and the junior fair for Wednesday, April 10. Both will be held at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound.

About the NWMO

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.
