Yes, for a site to be selected, the NWMO will need to demonstrate confidence that a safe, secure and socially acceptable transportation plan can be developed.
As part of the site selection process, the NWMO will identify preferred transportation modes and potential routes associated with each siting community.
These modes and routes will be necessarily preliminary and refined over the many years leading up to transportation.
In addition to transportation, we will also need confidence that a deep geological repository can be developed with a strong technical safety case; and that a strong partnership can be developed with the interested community, First Nation and Métis communities in the area, and surrounding communities.
