Ignace-area baseline and community studies
In November 2024, following a rigorous community-driven process, Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace agreed to enter the regulatory decision-making phase as potential host communities for Canada’s deep geological repository.
Overview
Socio-economic baseline studies and community studies help build a deep understanding of the potential impacts of hosting a deep geological repository.
Baseline studies present a factual representation of current social, cultural, economic and health conditions so we can assess how these conditions might change with the implementation of the deep geological repository in the future. Beyond the use of publicly available information, the studies also reflect data collection and conversations with an estimated 500 individuals and 70 local and regional organizations.
Community studies explore social, cultural, economic and infrastructure aspects to provide information on how the deep geological repository project might align with the Ignace community vision and the community’s aspirations for the future.
The results of the completed studies are published below. Engagement with the potential host communities is ongoing and will continue throughout the regulatory decision-making process.
