The Belmore Community Centre was abuzz with excitement as community members celebrated the grand opening of its redesigned hall.

“The Belmore Community Centre Renovation Committee was very excited to mark the completion of this wonderful project and proud to acknowledge the tremendous support from the community,” said Christine Inglis, member of Belmore Community Centre Renovation Committee. “The hall renovation was a labour of love, not only by us, but also by the whole community. We are so thankful for the Belmore Chamber of Commerce and our homecoming event, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, the family of the late Everett Dustow, and our Donate-to-Paint campaign. We take immense pride in our centre, and the support we received was remarkable.”

Over 1,250 volunteer hours went into the six-week renovation that included new LED lighting in the hall and bathrooms, painting of the hall, new wall panels, acoustics, live-edge countertops in the kitchen and bar, as well as a feature stone wall with a fireplace and a television.

“The Municipality of South Bruce is happy to support the ongoing effort the community volunteers put forward on the Belmore Community Centre renovation,” said South Bruce Deputy Mayor Mark Goetz, who attended the grand reopening. “This renovation was a great use of some of the funding available to the municipality through the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s Community Well-Being Fund. This renovation project will ultimately help the Belmore Community Centre grow and prosper; we are proud to have been a part of this important community project.”

The Municipality of South Bruce and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization committed $10,000 for the project, in addition to an earlier donation of $10,000 in 2018 to update the lighting in the Belmore library and curling club through the Community Well-Being Fund. The remainder of the funds for the community centre hall renovation were provided by the Belmore Chamber of Commerce.

The Belmore Community Centre is home to the Belmore Maple Syrup Festival. The festival is the single largest annual community event, run by approximately 300 community volunteers. More than 6,000 people from across Ontario attend the festival every year. The redesigned hall will also be an attractive venue for weddings, parties and other community.

About the NWMO

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.
