The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has appointed Caitlin Burley as Vice-President of Regulatory Approvals. Burley joins the NWMO’s executive team as the organization advances our mandate for the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste.
Burley brings more than 18 years of experience in advancing nuclear, energy, transmission and resource development projects through impact assessment, environmental assessment, regulatory engagement and licensing readiness. In her new role, she will provide leadership to secure and sustain all required federal, provincial and Indigenous permissions, including impact assessment, environmental assessment and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission licensing outcomes.
“As the NWMO continues to move the Deep Geological Repository for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project forward, I'm looking forward to bringing my experience with various Indigenous, provincial and federal regulatory processes to this important project,” said Burley. “I am honoured to lead the team advancing this important work through the regulatory decision-making process, bringing forward the evidence, expertise and rigour needed to support informed decisions by regulators.”
The NWMO is in the Impact Statement phase of the federal regulatory decision-making process for the deep geological repository for Canada’s used nuclear fuel. Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation, as one of the communities that agreed to enter the regulatory decision-making phase as a potential host for the repository, is also exercising its jurisdiction through its Regulatory Assessment and Approval Process.
Biography
Caitlin Burley previously served as Regulatory Decision-Making Project Director at the NWMO, where she worked cross-departmentally to support readiness for the impact assessment phase of our work. Prior to that, she served as Director of Strategic Programs and Transportation.
Earlier in her career, Burley supported and led federal and provincial assessments for projects such as the Cliffs Chromite Project, the Wataynikaneyap Transmission Project and the Bruce C Nuclear Project. She also worked on ExxonMobil’s Papua New Guinea Liquefied Natural Gas Project, and led First Nation community readiness policy through Ontario’s Ring of Fire Secretariat.
Burley holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Ottawa, a master of applied science degree in environmental management from Toronto Metropolitan University, and accreditation in consultation and dialogue from the International Association for Public Participation.
