The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has been working with communities to advance learning about Canada’s plan for some time now. To better understand how to improve the way the organization communicates and engages with the public, the NWMO has initiated community surveys in a number of communities, including Hornepayne, Huron-Kinloss, Ignace, Manitouwadge, and South Bruce. The surveys are designed to determine how communities would like to receive information at this point in the site selection process.

The community surveys, which are being conducted by an independent Canadian research firm on behalf of the NWMO, are open to households within these communities from Sept. 9, 2019, to Oct. 4, 2019. These are the communities in the current study areas that initially expressed interest in the project and initiated siting studies and activities. The results of the survey will be shared with communities and published online.

Outreach and engagement activities continue in these communities, as well as with First Nation and Métis communities and others in the area, involving a range of ongoing community meetings and events. 

There are currently two potential siting areas involved in the NWMO’s site selection process. The NWMO expects to identify a single, preferred location in an area with informed and willing hosts by 2024. The project will only proceed with the interested municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area, working together to implement it.
