The NWMO’s 2023-25 triennial report reflects three years of significant progress.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has published our 2023-25 triennial report, Creating the future together, which reflects three years of significant progress. The report also includes the NWMO’s 2026-30 implementation plan, outlining our strategic priorities for the next five years.

“Over the past three years, we have achieved transformational milestones that demonstrate we are acting now to protect people and the environment for generations to come,” said Laurie Swami, President and CEO of the NWMO. “Our vision is ambitious, and we know we can achieve it through technical excellence and meaningful collaboration, from the grassroots level all the way up to the international stage.”

The triennial report highlights the NWMO’s progress, including:

  • Making the historic site selection decision for our first repository project for used nuclear fuel.
  • Entering the regulatory decision-making process for our first repository project.
  • Advancing technical plans for the specific conditions of the first repository site and progressing designs for underground and above-ground infrastructure.
  • Preparing to build our Centre of Expertise in Ignace, Ont.
  • Publishing our proposed approach to selecting a site for our second repository project for intermediate-level, non-fuel high-level waste and potentially used nuclear fuel from new nuclear reactors.

In accordance with the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act, the report was submitted to Canada’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson on March 24, 2026. As part of the open and transparent process required by the Act, the report will also be tabled in Parliament in the coming weeks.
