Laurie Swami, President and CEO of the NWMO, is awarded the Presidential Award of Distinction from Ontario Tech University.

Laurie Swami, President and CEO of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), was recognized by Ontario Tech University with a Presidential Award of Distinction at their annual Chancellor’s Dinner on Oct. 14. This award celebrates individuals whose exceptional service, dedication and contributions have made a meaningful impact on the Ontario Tech experience and university community.

Through Swami’s volunteer service on Ontario Tech University’s Board of Governors, she has contributed her leadership and experience to help shape students’ futures. Her support of Ontario Tech’s Fueling the Future of Nuclear Talent campaign, which helps students develop skills needed across the nuclear workforce, reflects her belief in investing in students and creating opportunities for future generations.

At the NWMO, Swami has continuously championed opportunities for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and leadership roles, helping foster a more inclusive environment and inspire the next generation of leaders.

“I was honoured to receive this prestigious award from Ontario Tech University,” said Swami. “When I began my career in the nuclear industry, I was one of only a few women on the engineering team, and over the years, I’ve made it my mission to help change that. It’s truly inspiring to see the many young women who are stepping into leadership roles and bringing diverse perspectives to the work we do.”

Through her leadership, advocacy and dedication to advancing women in STEM, Swami has helped build a stronger future for Ontario Tech University and communities across Canada’s nuclear sector.
