The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) was named one of Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for 2026 — recognition that celebrates our commitment to building a workplace where people thrive while contributing to projects of national importance.
This honour reflects the NWMO’s dedication to fostering a culture rooted in collaboration, sustainability and long-term impact. It comes at a pivotal moment in our journey as we prepare to move from planning to implementation of Canada’s deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. This project is part of our broader mandate to ensure the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.
“We are creating a long-term, multigenerational, sustainable solution to a very real problem,” said Leigh Ann Layno, Vice-President of Human Resources and Chief Ethics Officer at the NWMO. “It’s a project you can build an entire career around.”
Founded in 2002, the NWMO has spent more than two decades developing Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel. In late 2024, we reached a significant milestone, informed by extensive technical studies and meaningful community engagement, with the selection of a repository site near Ignace, Ont., in the territory of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation.
As we enter the next phase of our work, the regulatory decision-making process, we continue to invest in our people. With a team of more than 250 employees across disciplines such as environmental science, engineering, finance and communications, the NWMO offers competitive compensation, professional development opportunities and a workplace culture that values Reconciliation, inclusion and innovation.
We also promote programs that support work-life balance and holistic well-being, fostering an inclusive workforce that truly reflects Canada’s diverse and evolving labour market.
The NWMO’s mission is to protect people and the environment for generations to come.
“That’s something that’s really rewarding on a professional level, to be able to say that I don’t just work here, but I truly believe in what we’re doing,” said Dorian Charette, Senior Communications Officer at the NWMO.
Highlights of our employee-focused programs include:
- A five-part cultural awareness training program supporting Reconciliation.
- A $400 fitness and wellness subsidy.
- Attractive and competitive salary packages designed to reward employees’ skills, experience and contributions.
