Ignace Open House: Reviewing Initial Borehole Drilling Plans

The Township of Ignace invited the NWMO to hold an open house at the Learn More Centre on March 1 and 2. The open house provided yet another opportunity for area residents to share their thoughts on the initial borehole drilling program planned for 2017.

Initial borehole drilling will provide core samples from a location at or near a potential repository site. This work will advance understanding of the local geology and help assess the area’s potential suitability to safely host a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.

Earlier studies helped identify the areas that have the potential to be geologically suitable. Based on further technical studies and input from people in the area, a location was identified to be the focus for initial borehole drilling.

The Ignace area is one of several in Ontario currently involved in the site selection process.

More information about activities in the region is available on the Ignace and Area page.
