The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) was thrilled to be part of the 2018 Dudley-Hewitt Cup held in Dryden, Ont., in May.

The annual round robin tournament of Central Canada Junior A hockey teams this year saw the hometown Dryden Ice Dogs (pictured) face off against the Wellington Dukes in the final. The Dukes went on to win 7-4.

“Hosting a tournament like the Dudley-Hewitt Cup requires countless hours to plan and execute, along with a substantial financial contribution. The Dudley-Hewitt Cup 2018 was a success due to the time that our volunteers gave, and the community-minded businesses that backed us financially,” said Colleen Oliphant, Chair of the Dudley-Hewitt Cup 2018.

“Thank you to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization for its support of our event. We are truly grateful for its contribution.” 

The NWMO’s Ignace Community Liaison Manager, Rachelle Davenport, was elated that the organization could help make the Dudley-Hewitt Cup a success. 

“We thank the tournament organizers and volunteers for hosting such a successful event,” said Rachelle. “The City of Dryden and community members must be proud of their hometown team and the demonstration of community spirit.”

The tournament features top teams from the Ontario Junior Hockey League, Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, and Superior International Junior Hockey League to determine the central seed to the Royal Bank Cup, which is the Canadian National Junior A Championship and is competed for by teams within the Canadian Junior Hockey League.

The trophy is named after George Dudley and W.A. Hewitt, two pioneers of amateur hockey in Ontario.
