The Northwest Region Provincial Police Hockey Team is helping to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Thunder Bay by participating in charity tournaments. One such tournament took place at the end of January where 17 teams participated.

The club provides a positive experience to members between four and 18 years old. It has been serving Thunder Bay’s children and youth for over 40 years.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) provided support for the purchase of new hockey uniforms for the Provincial Police Hockey Team.

“We believe it’s important to support initiatives that increase community well-being and connection,” said Rachelle Davenport, Relationship Manager at the NWMO. “We also acknowledge our emergency response personnel across the region for supporting their local communities.”

Emergency personnel from across northwestern Ontario come together on an annual basis to participate in the Law Enforcement Hockey Cup held in Thunder Bay.

This year, the charity tournament took place in January, and many teams participated to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Thunder Bay. Police officers from Ignace, Atikokan, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Ear Falls, Red Lake, and the Lac Seul First Nation proudly wore the uniforms.

“This year is the 10-year anniversary. The tournament saw teams from various police and fire services, EMS, corrections, and the military participate. It is an extremely positive, family friendly event”, said Patrick Price, one of the charity tournament participants.

Other charity-based community events planned include the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Polar Plunge in support of the Special Olympics to be hosted in Thunder Bay in 2020.

About the NWMO

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.
