To celebrate International Women’s Day, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has signed on to two important initiatives that aim to enhance and achieve full gender equality in the energy and electricity sectors.
The NWMO has been a champion of gender diversity for years, and is doubling down on those efforts by becoming a signatory of Equal by 30 and adopting Electricity Human Resources Canada’s Leadership Accord on Gender Diversity.
“I am so proud of our record – half our board is made up of women, and my senior leadership team is quite diverse, with over 40 per cent female and comprised of visible minorities and Indigenous people – but we know more work remains,” said Laurie Swami, President and CEO of the NWMO.
The NWMO has a strong record on gender equality, and signing on to Equal by 30 and adopting the Leadership Accord help bring needed attention to gender equality in the wider energy sector.

Equal by 30 is a commitment by public and private sector organizations to work towards equal pay, equal leadership and equal opportunities for women in the clean energy sector by 2030.
Similarly, the Electricity Human Resources Canada’s Leadership Accord on Gender Diversity commits signatories to gender diversity through the implementation of concrete initiatives that support a highly skilled, diverse and productive workforce.
By signing Equal by 30 and adopting Electricity Human Resources Canada’s Leadership Accord, the NWMO is standing shoulder to shoulder with many other industry-leading partners. These campaigns are two of many concrete steps that the NWMO has and will continue to take to commit to advancing gender equality in the organization. They build on our STEMinist campaign of the past two years.
