Peer review
Site Selection Review Group
The Site Selection Review Group was comprised of two internationally respected members from different professional backgrounds. These review group members had knowledge and experience in nuclear waste-related siting processes and international best practices.
The group provided independent advice and guidance on the NWMO’s final site selection approach for a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. Its purpose was to ensure the decision-making process was reasonable, comprehensive, credible and rigorous. Its mandate was completed in 2024.
The members of the Site Selection Review Group were:
- Tom Isaacs, chair of the Site Selection Review Group, lead advisor on the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future and senior advisor to the Nuclear Threat Initiative.
- Claes Thegerström, former president of the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company.
Each of the members was independent of the NWMO, the site selection process and the municipal and Indigenous communities involved in the process.

Scientific journal reviews
The NWMO regularly undergoes independent peer reviews when publishing technical research results in scientific journals and at conferences. On specific topics, we seek out peer reviews or request that state-of-science reviews be prepared by leading experts.
